Often times, I will have the conversation with my boyfriend about what it is I am doing when I am "surfing the Internet" looking at different sites. He seems to be under the impression that all of my web surfing is nothing more than a myriad of wasted time doing nothing. However, nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, there is a method to the madness of this so called "surfing". What is really going on is I am making sure that I am staying up-to-date with the latest trends in social media as well as looking to see what other people are doing with their websites.

Technology changes so rapidly, that often, all we have to do is blink and then it's gone. In such a rapidly changing environment, it is absolutely important (and imperative) that small business owners, individuals and entrepreneurs stay abreast of the latest developments. Part of this has to do with communicating via social media and social networking channels. Sites such as Digg, StumbleUpon, Propeller, Facebook and most notably, Twitter, have really changed the face of many businesses across both the United States of America as well as the world.

It's no longer just about what you are putting out there on a website. Rather, it social media is a means for business owners and people to communicate with each other. Someone who lives in another country who is interested in purchasing an item or several items from a business owner's website in another country feels better about the purchase if he or she knows that there is an actual person behind all of the scenes. This is part of the reason why websites like Twitter are so wildly popular. Think about it. When you use Twitter, a microblogging service, you are able to communicate with millions of people in REAL TIME. This is huge news for those who own businesses because it means that the moment someone (say, a customer or consumer) wants to contact the owner or employees of a particular company, all they have to do is 'tweet' about it or directly message them.

You'll often see people utilizing Twitter on the news lately. Twitter has also become a valued resource for finding or hearing the latest breaking news no matter where you go- and often before the news gets a chance to travel to the actual news stations! For instance, when news broke that Michael Jackson had died, the first place that many people heard about it was on Twitter. This is partly because with Twitter and all of the applications that are out there for it, you can take it with you on your mobile phone. This allows members to send updates from wherever they are. Another example of the power of Twitter could be seen when I was stuck in traffic on a road that normally didn't get traffic. As it turned out, I whipped out my Blackberry and logged into Twitter. I then searched for other people who lived in the same area as me; and sure enough, someone had tweeted that there was an accident on the very road that I was on. I turned around and avoided having to sit any longer in the delay (which ended up being hours!)
